Rumors are running rampant, so this is an attempt to bring everyone up to speed on the staff developments within our American Fork Band Program. We are saddened to confirm that Mike Huestis, our percussion instructor for the past 8 years, has accepted a position in Texas working with the Colony High School Percussion program. This is a great positive career move for Mike as he moves into one of the top percussion programs in the Nation. Mike has made a huge impact in our programs at American Fork including development of the Steel Drum program, consistent Superior ratings at percussion festivals, his amazing contribution to our marching band program concepts and undefeated drum lines, and accomplishments and lives touched too numerous to count. Words can never fully express my appreciation for Mike and for what he has done for our band. Mike has been a critical part of our program and has brought his creativity and expertise to touch the lives of many of our students. I personally have learned much from Mike and his leaving creates yet another void in our staff family. We thank him for all he has done while with us and wish him great success in his future endeavors. Our loss is Texas‘s gain and in Mikes own words, we know that he will continue to “work hard and to have fun”. We all thank Mike for his impact on our program and students and we will miss him more than he knows.
We have already begun a national search for a percussion instructor and have the approval of both principals to continue that position. We will involve the percussion students in the decision and have great confidence that our tradition of excellence will continue. Change is never easy but we will make every effort to make it a positive experience for everyone. We hope to have a percussion instructor by band camp at the latest. We don’t want to hurry this selection because it is of such importance to our program. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we move through this selection process.
We will miss you Mike.
